When the protagonist begins an affair with a beautiful Brooklynite, his sense of place evolves and the audience is challenged to reconcile traditional notions of romance and intimacy with Goethe's 'frightening conclusion' that the subjective experience is 'the decisive element.'

The Director's note: Fading Away is basically Martha und Herbert's journey, told in a series of episodes. To those who are close to her, Martha's outward behaviour appears increasingly strange. From Martha's perspective, we can see that she appears to live in her own world and increasingly losing her grip on reality and her own identity.Herbert tries to keep their life as it is as much as he can. He hopes everything will turn out good. Ultimately, all Herbert can do is to see himself as part of her fantasy world and play along with it. This is the only way for him to hold on to their last moments together.I have had personal experience of the effects of Alzheimer's disease in my own family - the difficulties involved in dealing with it and the bizarre situations it sometimes throws up -. I think that, in the light of ongoing demographic change, more questions come up, what the future may be for us when we grow older. How do we behave when we are older? How can our husband/wife be sure? Will he/she always be with me when I already forgot him/her?
